The Kelly VC Family Trip to Africa, the UK and Japan!
Welcome!
Welcome to the Kelly / Varcoe-Cocks world trip blog in July/August 2012. This year we head to Africa, (Namibia and Botswana) traveling solo by 4wd for a month. Assuming we survive charging elephants, roaring lions and vicious hippo's we head north to London for the Olympics. After watching Australia at the Basketball, Tae Kwon Do and visiting Legoland for Luke's 9th birthday we head to Ireland to visit our multitude of friendly relatives. Homeward bound with a stop in Tokyo to really get extreme cultural experiences we will be back on the 27th August. We hope you enjoy our trip with us!

Lego Land Windsor 8 August
Today is the day that Luke has been waiting for, for the whole trip. His birthday and visiting Legoland. After a breakfast of pancakes and strawberries, the birthday boys request, we headed off in Deirdre's car. The traffic was as one would expect in London, terrible, but we made it to Windsor just after 10. After purchasing some Qbots, a fabulous system where you can have the qbot queue for you and tell you when it is your turn to go on a ride, we met up with Julie and Alex. The day basically consisted of going from ride to ride as the Qbot beeped to tell us we could go on to the next ride. Each ride has massive Lego creations which were really quite incredible. The highlights were the water rides which of course meant getting wet. One consisted of a Viking ride where you were spun around in circles on a huge inflatable boat whilst real people and Lego Vikings shot water at you. Massive Lego dragons watched over the proceedings. The other ride a pirate ride, took you down a river with Lego pirate scenes on the banks, before the grand finale of climbing up a huge ramp that then shot you down a waterfall. One of the highlights for Luke was a miniland of Star Wars where they had different scenes from movies made entirely out of Lego. It was very impressive and of course led to the need for more star wars Lego. Luckily it was his birthday. There was another mini land which had famous landmarks from Britain around the world, made from Lego including the London Eye, Buckingam Palace, Canary Wharf, the Wharfs, scenes from Holland and other European countries. Someone has a great job. They had all the African animals that we had see on safari scattered around one part of the park, making us wonder why we even needed to go. One ride we were on a submarine that goes underwater where there is a reef with real tropical fish, sharks and rays as well as king Neptune, divers and mermaids made out of Lego. Laser tag, pirate ships and rollercoasters were also on the agenda. Not surprisingly it was 8pm before we left the park at closing time and it was 5 very exhausted people that went straight to bed on arrival back in London.

Horniman Museum London 7 August
After a big day at the Olympics we took it slow in the morning heading off to the Horniman Museum for something different in South East London. Ciara came with us, she and the boys were getting on very well which was great to see. Ciara is quite adamant she doesnt want to be a girl so is happy to have her slightly older male cousins around. Everyone was hungry by the time we got to the museum, an unusual place set in 14 acres of beautiful gardens. The museum is primarily the collections of its benefactor who had obviously travelled the world extensively. After lunch, we firstly went through the small aquarium which proved to have some rare species including the Brazilian milk frog and an extremely venomous blue frog. Next was the stuffed animal and skeleton collections, traditionally presented in glass boxes with some amazing samples including pet dogs, which is always a bit disconcerting. Following that a huge collection of native African items including masks, musical items, headwear and weapons which was of particular interest to us. The final room had the biggest collection of musical instruments I have ever seen with every conceivable instrument you could think of and hundreds of others we'd never heard of or seen. Before heading back the kids played tiggy in the gardens and insisted on having their photographs taken in a variety of poses, especially Luke who seems to be becoming more of a showman every day.
After taking the train back to London, Mandy went and picked up the remaining Olypmic tickets, whilst the boys and Ciara headed home with Liam. Mandy then caught up with friends for a drink in Canary Wharf which was buzzing despite the rainy weather.
