Welcome!

Welcome to the Kelly / Varcoe-Cocks world trip blog in July/August 2012. This year we head to Africa, (Namibia and Botswana) traveling solo by 4wd for a month. Assuming we survive charging elephants, roaring lions and vicious hippo's we head north to London for the Olympics. After watching Australia at the Basketball, Tae Kwon Do and visiting Legoland for Luke's 9th birthday we head to Ireland to visit our multitude of friendly relatives. Homeward bound with a stop in Tokyo to really get extreme cultural experiences we will be back on the 27th August. We hope you enjoy our trip with us!

Nxai pan to Makgadikgi Pan 29 July

Today was a very exciting day. After breakfast and packing up, we headed out to the waterhole one last time. The waterhole was a hive of activity. The SA couple we had met the previous day were there and told us 3 lion were just up the road showing us where they were. We couldn't see them particularly well in the grass, but after about 5 mins whilst we watched the biggest male got up and started to move. We followed him for a while until he sat down behind another bush and then went back to see the other male and female. They soon got up and headed directly towards us passing right in front of the car. Very exciting. We watched them until they were gone, the 3rd lion joining them. It had been worth coming up that final time. We now headed out of the park to the neighboring southern park Makgadikgi. One had to wonder why all the animals don't move here for the winter. A fabulous river flows through the south of it which the animals flock to, compared to the one dirty waterhole at Nxai. There were large herds of Wildebeest and Zebra who seem to mingle closely together. Kudu, impala and giraffe were also around and of course elephants. Our companions at camp, overlooking the river, were the vervet monkeys again. Some were supremely confident. One actually got in the car whilst Luke was in it and proceeded to try and climb in the window right where he was sitting later. Luke found it highly amusing that that he then copied his moves as he sat on the front bonnet. If he scowled the monkey scowled, if he barred his teeth so did the monkey. He didn't manage to get away with anything though. Strangely after one of our last game drives of the trip with a beautiful sunset, the monkeys were gone when we got back to camp. We did have another visitor that night around the campfire, this time in the form of a honey badger. He was also very confident coming right up to the fireplace sniffing for food I assume. He then went and dug under the rubbish bin for any leftovers. Later 4 of then had an argument outside our tent but nothing bigger than them passed through camp that night.
