Welcome!

Welcome to the Kelly / Varcoe-Cocks world trip blog in July/August 2012. This year we head to Africa, (Namibia and Botswana) traveling solo by 4wd for a month. Assuming we survive charging elephants, roaring lions and vicious hippo's we head north to London for the Olympics. After watching Australia at the Basketball, Tae Kwon Do and visiting Legoland for Luke's 9th birthday we head to Ireland to visit our multitude of friendly relatives. Homeward bound with a stop in Tokyo to really get extreme cultural experiences we will be back on the 27th August. We hope you enjoy our trip with us!

Kharman Rhino Lodge to London 1 August

We started off our last full day in Africa, and our last day in Botswana with a hunt for rhino. Unfortunately, despite our best efforts it was not successful. Giving up we headed to the Botswana/ South African border via Sowero the largest African Traditional village and home to the current President of Botswana. Not sure what makes a town a traditional African village as it looked just like any other African town, but it was big with a very impressive hospital. If I was an African being ill would be almost appealing. We stopped at the border for lunch and cleared immigration in and out of both countries easily. It was immediately obvious driving in South Africa that we were in a country that had been run by white people. All along the roads were huge farms with large houses, fences and gates. We were heading to one such farm for the night, Waterberg Wilderness Reserve. We were nearly out of petrol, so stopped at a small petrol station that had an ATM, only to find after we had put in the petrol that it didn't accept any foreign cards and that they didn't accept any credit cards. This left us in a bit of a dilemma as we had no rand. The owner after some discussions was very kind and agreed to let us leave money with his father in law,at the next town 50kms away, which we duly did. After all this we arrived at our camp that night after dark, driving down a dusty lane, with farms on either side. We had a tented camp that night which the boys were very excited about. One big tent had 4 beds and a bathroom whilst the other tent had a kitchen dining area. We looked over a valley which could be done from a hammock. Most of the morning was spent sorting out all our gear and the car trying to repack everything into our original bags. We had time for a brief walk before lunch down to a waterhole, seeing some game, before having lunch and heading off to Joburg. We had an easy drive into Joburg airport, where our car was whisked away and before we knew it our trip in Africa was over and we were on the plane to London!
