Welcome!

Welcome to the Kelly / Varcoe-Cocks world trip blog in July/August 2012. This year we head to Africa, (Namibia and Botswana) traveling solo by 4wd for a month. Assuming we survive charging elephants, roaring lions and vicious hippo's we head north to London for the Olympics. After watching Australia at the Basketball, Tae Kwon Do and visiting Legoland for Luke's 9th birthday we head to Ireland to visit our multitude of friendly relatives. Homeward bound with a stop in Tokyo to really get extreme cultural experiences we will be back on the 27th August. We hope you enjoy our trip with us!

Chobe River 19th July 2012

We have had the most amazing day on the river. We have spent the whole day cruising the river watching a huge amount and array of animals. We went to the end of the Chobe in the morning, and cruised up towards Kasane after lunching opposite the Chobe Game Park Lodge, where the boys did some fishing. In the afternoon, the river was literally teaming with animals. Buffalo, elephant, giraffe, hippo, warthog, baboons and various kinds of antelope lined the banks. We saw new animals in bush pigs, water buck and sable antelope. We got up very close and personal with some huge crocodile, hippos and elephant. Big water monitors (lizards) were also around and hundreds of different birds were on the banks and fishing in the river. We think we were the envy of the other tourists having just the 4 of us atop our boat able to go where we wanted for the whole day. They were all in groups of 10 to 20 stuck in their seats in boats the same size as ours or in trucks on the shore. Later in the afternoon we had the river to ourselves as the sun went down. Buffalo carcasses litter the bank every now and then and we hoped that a pride of lions might come down for a drink, but no. It was a beautiful sunset as we set up camp on the river the same place as the night before. The boys still had no luck fishing. Elephants were across the river and local fisherman just up from us, although apparently it is illegal to fish. We will be sad to leave our boat in the morning but in some ways looking forward to being on the road again.
