Welcome!

Welcome to the Kelly / Varcoe-Cocks world trip blog in July/August 2012. This year we head to Africa, (Namibia and Botswana) traveling solo by 4wd for a month. Assuming we survive charging elephants, roaring lions and vicious hippo's we head north to London for the Olympics. After watching Australia at the Basketball, Tae Kwon Do and visiting Legoland for Luke's 9th birthday we head to Ireland to visit our multitude of friendly relatives. Homeward bound with a stop in Tokyo to really get extreme cultural experiences we will be back on the 27th August. We hope you enjoy our trip with us!

Etosha to Onguma Bush Camp 9th July 2012

After another fabulous sleep and for the kids a bit of a sleep in till 7:30am we quickly visited the water hole before heading to breakfast. Another huge cooked breakfast. We could get used to this luxury. After a final visit to the
Waterhole where a huge herd of zebra followed by Oryx and a lone Kudu visited, followed by the springbok, we headed off. The very nice garage man had given us some more fuses. We started off well with the car starting, managed to get some windows down before the electrics failed again. We made our way across to the far Eastern side of Etosha which took us 6 hours. Lots of game were around on the plains with huge herds of zebra, springbok, oryx and wildebeest. At one point we had to stop to let a herd of Elephant cross the road, later we were stopped for giraffe crossing the road. Inland in the more scrubby areas we found Kudu, Impala and Red Hartebeest. he highlights were at the end of the day when 10 giraffe and a rhino were at one of the last waterholes. Some waterholes were completely empty or others had no water at all. Jackals were hanging around a lot of them. At the lat waterhole of the day a group of Vultures, very ugly birds were hanging around in the trees. We saw 2 massive eagles, as big as wedgetails and had lunch with 3 hornbills. No cats today though.

We left Etosha and entered our campsite right next to the Eastern Gate. Onguma Bush Camp is lovely and luxury camping. Each campsite has its own bathroom, fire block, bin and washing up sink! We had a drink over the private waterhole in the lounge which is very nicely done. The boys were excited by the pool.

Back to camp cooking and last night hopefully sleeping in this car. It really was very cold going to bed and it now must be getting very close to 0, if not a few degrees below. We won't be rushing up in the morning.

  1. Great to see the amazing photos - and glad all is going well, it will be hard to get back to normal. All ok at the house, Edward and I counted 18 kangaroos when we checked a few days ago. Still cold and damp. Toby fine. Hope the new car has arrived, and good luck in the desert. Cheers Mum
