Welcome!

Welcome to the Kelly / Varcoe-Cocks world trip blog in July/August 2012. This year we head to Africa, (Namibia and Botswana) traveling solo by 4wd for a month. Assuming we survive charging elephants, roaring lions and vicious hippo's we head north to London for the Olympics. After watching Australia at the Basketball, Tae Kwon Do and visiting Legoland for Luke's 9th birthday we head to Ireland to visit our multitude of friendly relatives. Homeward bound with a stop in Tokyo to really get extreme cultural experiences we will be back on the 27th August. We hope you enjoy our trip with us!

Windhoek to Spitzkuppe 2nd July

After a very long good sleep (we collapsed at 6:30pm and woke at 6:30am) we had a very hearty breakfast and our car arrived. Great excitement for the boys who instantly fell in love with it. Luke's going to buy one when he grows up. Shopping took us a long time as we negotiated the Namibian supermarket. Pilchards, anchovies, maize and sauerkraut are obviously staples. After lunch at the local mall and stocking up with extra blankets and meat at a local butcher we finally headed out onto the open road. Our destination was Spitzkuppe a large rock mountain to the west. Great excitement enroute as we encountered numerous warthogs along the side of the road, a baboon and kudu. It took us longer than expected driving through very dry flat, rocky country full of acacias. It was dusk when we arrived at the community campsite of Spitzkuppe. Spectacular coming in with the sun setting and the rocks rising over the flat landscape. We found a bush campsite beneath the rocks and managed to get our camp set up for the first time, finishing in the dark. Had dinner around the campfire and pretty much collapsed in bed after.
